Moab Utah SkinnyTire - Final and Photos

I had a fantastic time helping with Communications at SkinnyTire in Moab Utah. I hope I'll be back to do this again next year.

I've uploaded Day 4 of the Photos. Click on the link for the photos with descriptons and commentaries or see the Slide Show.

Moab Skinny Tire Events was founded in 2001. After losing his older brother to cancer, Mark Griffith wanted to find a way to deal with his grief. He put purpose to his cycling and began the Moab Skinny Tire Festival with a few close friends to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Twelve riders signed up that first year and the ride is now capped at one thousand riders as it enters it's ninth year.

The Moab Century Tour was founded in 2003 and gained fame for it's challenging ride over the La Sal Loop road or what has been nicknamed the "Big Nasty". This climb has 3000 feet sustained elevation gain in 7 miles. Riders are rewarded for their efforts as they cruise down into the spectacular Castle Valley with redrock formations.

Through the efforts of the riders, Skinny Tire Events has donated over $700,000 to cancer survivorship programs such as the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the Moab Cancer Treatment and Resource Center.

Day 3 SkinnyTire Festival Moab Arches

What a difference a day makes! Day 2 of the SkinnyTire Festival was rained / snowed out! Today was fantastic! I think Day 3 was the highlight of the entire festival. This Bike Event is one of the very few Bike events to be allowed to ride through Arches National Park. I think the communications is a big part of that to keep things flowing and organized.

When this festival was started they tried Cell phones, Satellite phones, and FRS / GMRS radios. None of them were near as effective as Ham Radio!

Today the weather cooperated and we had clear skies and the temperature was about 55 degrees. It was a little chilly, but not bad at all.

Check out my Photos on Flickr of Day 1,2 and 3.

Tomorrow we check out of our hotel, and run the last day of the festival. I'll be heading directly back to Denver immediately following the festival.

Day 2 of SkinnyTire in Moab Cancelled for Bad Weather

Day 2 of the SkinnyTire Festival in Moab was cancelled because of the bad weather. We were supposed to ride up Highway 313 to Dead Horse Point. I took a drive up to the Dead Horse Point State Park and there was nothing but Dense Fog! .. And Snow!
This is a mild shot at the beginning of the road up.

Snow day in #Moab today. Day 2 of Skinnytire was cancelled. ... on Twitpic

Tomorrow should be a lot warmer. It was fun exploring.

Day 1 SkinnyTire Festival Moab Utah

It's awesome here in Moab Utah. It was a little cold and windy but in all a very successful first run for the Spring SkinnyTire Festival.

There were no major issues. Everyone had a good time. There are hundreds of bikers here this weekend. Most of the bikers are over 40 years old! That's very cool.

I worked the last Aid Station in Castle Valley on Highway 128 going Northwest from Moab to Cisco.

Tommorrow should be interesting! We've been having rain and lightning the last 3 hours. It's now Icy Rain and we should be having a little snow tomorrow morning for Day 2. Tomorrow's going to be the coldest day. We'll see Snow up on the bluffs.

International DX Contest

I worked a lot of countries during the last 24 hours with the International DX Contest. Just me and my ham shack! It's still going on but I'm pretty tired!

Check out this live Camera into station ZW5B out of Brazil. It's still going on. I worked these guys on multiple bands.
